Gray - John - 1902

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal Friday, 24 January 1902

The following notice is published at the request of the friends of John Gray, who was formerly a resident of this county:

The funeral services of the late John Gray were held at the Grant Church at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon, Jan. 11, conducted by Rev. W. F. Vander Lippe, of Deepwater, Mo. A large audience of friends and neighbors were present. Miss Bertha Irwin presided at the organ at the request of the family. At their request also, Mr. M. V. Blaney led the singing of the favorite selections of the deceased, “Asleep in Jesus,”  “Face, Fade, Each Earthly Joy,” and “Nearer My God to Thee.”

The scripture selections were the 8th and 19th Psalms, so dear to the departed and which the loved ones so often heard him repeat. In his remarks the minister comforted the mourning helpmate with the thought that he fell asleep so painlessly and sweetly, was free from earth’s great trials and, when soon they might meet again, it would be in those many mansions where partings should be no more.
The men and women and their
families, his children, he consoled with the thought that they had had his comforting and guiding love so many years, and especially had his son, John and daughter Mellie been permitted for long to minister to him and relieve his wants that his remembrance would always be a sweet benefit to them.

John Gray was born Dec. 18, 1820, in Brown County, Ohio. He lived there until his tenth year and moved from there to Indiana, thence to Missouri in ’67. He was converted at the age of 12 or 13 years and always lived a consistent Christian life and was faithful in leading regularly the family worship.

He died Wednesday, Jan. 8th, in a sinking spell, after they had been able to pull him through several others. He leaves to mourn him his aged widow and seven children, four children having preceded him. - s -
